Today we tried something new! A karate class! I am always looking for ways for my son to let out some energy. I think this program is going to help with that. Kicking the Spectrum
@kickingthespectrum.com is a Karate program geared towards kids like mine. The instructor was very patient, he knew exactly what to say and when to say it. The class will follow a routine and he will wear a uniform, just like the typical kids who take Karate. I was so proud of how well he did, and more important, he really seemed to enjoy it! Can t wait for our first official class!!

Another school vacation is here! Nine days to fill up! Finding things to keep my son busy can be a challenge for that length of time. I don t like him just sitting in the house, he has too much energy for that! He likes to have notice on what he will be doing so I really try to plan a few days ahead. I have verbally taken him through the next few days and so far he is showing interest in all of my ideas! We will be meeting friends for lunch, going to his favorite bookstore, trying a new Karate class and today we are walking over The Brooklyn Bridge! I am always looking for ideas.....I would love to hear yours.....what do you do when you are home over a school vacation and how does your child handle the long breaks from school?

Over the next decade, 500,000 young adults with autism will age out of publicly-funded day programs and services, according to researcher Paul Shattuck, associate professor at the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute. This adult services "cliff" is gaining more attention in the news, and was recently highlighted by The Boston Globe.

IN AMERICA in 1970 one child in 14,000 was reckoned to be autistic. The current estimate is one in 68—or one in 42 among boys. Similarly high numbers can be found in other rich countries: a study in South Korea found that one in 38 children was affected. Autism is a brain condition associated with poor social skills. It has a wide spectrum of symptoms, from obsessive behaviour to hypersensitivity to sound, light or other sensory stimulation, the severity of which ranges from mild to life-blighting. The range of consequences is also wide. At one end, the autism of a computer scientist may be barely noticeable; at the other, a quarter of autistic children do not speak.

She spoke before the 450 students at the school
The fourth grader explained in her own words what it is like to be autistic
She was diagnosed aged four, but it was only explained to her a year ago
